Sega Has Made A Mega Drive/Genesis Super Baby To Wrestle With Nintendo’s NES Jr. (UPDATE)

Update: Kotaku has reported that this is not in fact an official Sega product, but rather a Chinese company’s bootleg emulator that has been around for years. Its also been reported that it doesn’t have the best reputation, being known for tons of delay and other poor emulation issues. We’ll update this story if more information develops.

Sega, in an attempt to give their hedgehog son the best birthday ever while simultaneously one-upping Nintendo, have unveiled a Plug and Play Mega Drive/Genesis hybrid that could very well cause some rough and tumble on the playground this October.

Trumping the NES Classic Edition’s built in library of 30 NES titles, the new Lil’ Genesis comes with over 30 Mega Drive and Genesis titles including:

Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle
Alien Storm
Altered Beast
Arrow Flash
Bonanza Bros.
Chakan: The Forever Man
Columns III
Comix Zone
Crack Down
Decap Attack
Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine
ESWAT: City Under Siege
Eternal Champions
Fatal Labyrinth
Gain Ground
Golden Axe
Golden Axe II
Golden Axe III
Jewel Master
Kid Chameleon
Mortal Kombat I
Mortal Kombat II
Mortal Kombat III
Phantasy Star 2
Phantasy Star 3
Shadow Dancer: The Secret of Shinobi
Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master
Sonic & Knuckles
Sonic Spinball
Sonic the Hedgehog
Sonic the Hedgehog II
Sonic 3D Blast
Sword of Varmilion
The Ooze
Vectorman II

-and over 30 additional Sega Puzzle games.

The system will cost around $60 USD, and come with two controllers, making it a direct competitor with the NES Classic. Even more challenging, an SD card slot will be built into the tiny Sega, giving the theoretical ability for “Unlimited Expansion” in the future, something that the NES Classic has been severely criticized for. While it may not quite be the console wars of the 90’s relived in HD, how Nintendo will respond to Sega’s take could be very, very interesting.
