I spent the whole time editing this podcast on a yoga ball. So Gabe, I get you.
Update: Paul Raines, when asked to comment on PlayStation VR’s new release window, had this to say:
“To clarify, Sony has not officially announced a release date for PlayStation VR. Whenever it launches, we are excited about how the technology will change gaming.”
So this apparent Fall release window isn’t anything official yet. However, it’s likely that Sony has, at the very least, communicated privately to GameStop that they’re aiming for this fall, even though they aren’t ready to commit to that officially yet. Sony will most likely come out with a more concrete release date for PlayStation VR by the end of this year’s e3, so keep an eye out for more info in a few months.
Original Story: The PlayStation VR Headset has new release schedule if GameStop’s CEO Paul Raines is to be believed. In an interview with Fox Bssiness, Raines talked about all three of the major VR headsets coming out this year. GameStop is still in discussion with the other two major players, Oculus and HTC, about carrying their products which will be launching in March and April respectively. However, he confirmed that GameStop will be selling Sony’s VR product some time this fall.
If this is true, it would mean that PlayStation VR has been quietly delayed from its previously announced release window of some time in the first half of this year. However, this was last talked about in March 2015, almost a year ago, so it’s not exactly surprising that the target release window would change between then and now. Either way, Raines seems confident in both the future of VR and GameStop’s role in it.
Rain was quoted as saying:
“When you bring to bear our market dominance, our PowerUp Rewards program, and the fact that we have over a billion dollars in trade currency every year, it’s hard for us not to dominate (the VR Marketplace).”
I guess we’ll know later this year whether his confidence in VR will pay off for GameStop.
